Boat Donations
Thank you for considering a boat donation to Sailing Education Adventures (SEA). We truly appreciate your interest in supporting our mission and taking the time to explore whether a boat donation is the right option for you.
For many donors, a donation in support of youth sailing and access to the Bay is a meaningful way to honor the legacy of a boat they care about. When the fit is right, boat donations can provide important support for SEA’s programs while also offering donors a clear, responsible, and mission-aligned path for their vessel.
Because SEA is a small nonprofit with limited staff, storage, and operational capacity, our Board of Directors has adopted clear criteria for accepting boat donations. These guidelines help ensure that donations are a mutual benefit—supporting our educational mission without creating unintended burdens for the organization or unmet expectations for donors.
Our goal is to be transparent and upfront so donors can determine early whether SEA is a good match for their boat and their goals.
Below is a simple overview of the types of boat donations we are able to consider. You can also download this overview and a checklist here.

Our Approach
Our Focus is Primarily Resale
SEA accepts boat donations generally only when there is a reasonable expectation that the boat can be sold in its current condition with no or minimal additional work. The exception to this is when the donation can be directly added to our current teaching fleet (dinghy’s and safety boats). While we are focused on resale, it’s important to know that proceeds from boat sales support our educational programs and scholarships. This focus allows us to remain mission-driven, fiscally responsible, and good stewards of donated assets.
We Can Consider Accepting Boats That Are:
Intended for resale, not restoration or long-term projects
Align with our current fleet, and are usable as is
Complete and in working order, with no major missing systems
Structurally sound, with no known hull or deck failure
Able to be moved safely (engine present and operable, if applicable)
Maintained over time, rather than long-deferred or abandoned
Clear of liens and legal issues, with proper title or registration
Likely to generate net proceeds that justify the time and cost of sale
Able to remain in their current slip (or transported at donor expense), if SEA storage is limited
We Cannot Accept Boats That Are:
Restoration or “project” boats
Boats requiring major repair, refit, or troubleshooting
Boats with missing titles, unresolved ownership issues, or liens
Boats near end-of-life or likely to become disposal liabilities
Boats requiring immediate hauling, towing, or emergency removal
Boats intended for use in SEA programs or volunteer repair efforts
While many boats have personal or historical value, accepting project boats would divert limited staff time and resources away from our core educational mission.
Important Notes for Donors
SEA cannot assign or guarantee a donation value.
SEA cannot promise a sale price or timeline.
Donations are accepted as-is and irrevocable.
Donors are responsible for obtaining any appraisal and consulting a tax professional if seeking a tax deduction. This IRS document has a lot of helpful information: Donors guide to vehicle donation
SEA retains full discretion over pricing, marketing, sale method, or disposal if resale is not feasible.
Our Decision Process
Every potential boat donation is reviewed thoughtfully by SEA staff and/or a committee using consistent, board-approved criteria. Not all boats can be accepted, and declining a donation is never a reflection on the donor’s generosity.
