Adult and Family Sailing
SEA is a great place for beginning sailors of all ages. We have a number of ways for adults and families to get involved in sailing.
Beginning and Intermediate Adult Sailing Classes
We offer high-quality beginning sailing classes, and intermediate sailing learning opportunities through our keelboat membership.
See below for details, schedules, registration instructions, and cancellation / refund policies.
Note: If we don’t have a class currently, or none of our scheduled class dates work for you, sign up on our waitlist below. We will notify you when other classes open up.
On-demand lessons and classes
We can create a custom class for a family group that brings together adult sailing and youth sailing principles and learning.
We can also work with our youth counselors to create private sailing lessons (mutual schedule depending)
Note: If you want to talk about creation of a custom class for your family, or private sailing lessons, please reach out to talk further: programdirector@sfsailing.org

Beginning Small Boat Sailing
An introduction to sailing small boats (the BEST way to learn to sail!) Students will learn to tack, jibe, sail on all points of sail, dock the boat, and learn how to get into and out of the "safety position" and into and out of "irons". Safety and self-confidence are emphasized.
Class will cover basic knots, and rigging a simple small sailboat. Adult Beginning Sailing will be taught on the water using SEA’s 16.5’ Catalina keelboats. Classes are capped at a maximum of 6 students supported by an instructor and up to two assistants.
Current Sessions
No more current sessions are planned in 2025. We will host new classes starting in later Spring 2026. Sign up on our waitlist to be notified when new classes are added.

Intermediate Keel Boat Sailing
This is the next step up from the Small Boat Sailing and involves use of a larger boat and more advanced navigational skills under diverse conditions.
Traditionally, SEA has offered intermediate class. But in the last year we have moved away from this structure towards a keelboat membership.
With the keelboat membership learning is a peer-to-peer experience with more experienced members sharing their knowledge through a structured “skills-assessment” check off process that allows individuals to develop practical keelboat experience over time at their own pace alongside other supportive members. Once complete, a keelboat member can take out one of our two Harbor 20 keelboats at anytime (conditions permitting).
If you are interested in our keelboat membership and what the skills assessment process involves, please reach out to talk further: programdirector@sfsailing.org
