Peter and Jana’s Adventure

Excited to share a report on SEA members Peter and Jana’s journey from SF to Hawaii and then on to Alaska and back down through Canada to home. Peter and Jana left the Bay Area on June 8. They have completed two legs of their triangular journey - to Hawaii and then on to Alaska (August 1 to 24).

They are now well on their way back home having traversed the Inland passage and coming into the continental US.

They have been chronicling their amazing journey on Facebook and it's well worth a viewing. You can also see their current position here

A post from their passage to Hawaii caught my eye as a lovely summary of the experience

"When I lay in bed it feels like riding a roller coaster and on top of it I hear water swirling all around us. Then there are noises that the boat makes.... I lay in bed and try to completely relax my body and mind. The mind is the harder one. I am thankful for the meditation practices I have been doing. And then comes the morning and I can greet the ocean and love it in its full power. What a ride!"

What a ride indeed. We can't wait to hear more about it when you both return!

Thank you David Hirzel

After 7+ years, our good friend David Hirzel is stepping down from the SEA Board.

David’s sailing journey began in 2006 when he first caught the wind aboard Kitty Sark, a charming 16-foot wooden gaff-rigged catboat owned by his wife Alice Cochran. That first sail ignited a deep passion for the sea, leading David on countless adventures—from the coast of Maine to the icy waters of Antarctica. This passion is what ultimately brought him to SEA, where he has been a dedicated Secretary.

His love for maritime history and education are ever-present. For over 20 years, he has brought the past to life through his writing and talks at San Francisco Maritime’s Living History. He is also a popular guest lecturer for Viking and other cruise lines. He also supports traditional sailing education programs with Call of the Sea. In every role, he seamlessly blends his expertise in design, sailing, and storytelling.

David's passion for early Antarctic exploration shines through in his writing, especially in his Sailor on Ice series about Tom Crean, one of Shackleton’s most steadfast crew members.

When not writing or sailing on San Francisco Bay, David continues to pursue his career in residential architecture.

Thank you for your dedication and support David.

Final Fun Race

On Saturday October 12th we held the last of our three fun races out of Loch Lomond. We had six boats on the water (3 Quests, 3 Catalinas). The wind was light, but good enough to race.

Everyone had a lot of fun and enjoyed some pizza and beer back at Andy’s afterwards. Given the turnout and enthusiasm, we will definitely be doing more of these in the future!

We will be announcing the overall series winner who will receive the 2024 Lawler Cup at our annual member meeting October 27. If you are a member RSVP here.

Thank you Critical Control for sponsoring SEA’s 2024 fun race series.

California Coastal Cleanup

September 21st was the 40th annual California Coastal Cleanup. Loch Lomond Yacht Club hosted a clean up around the Marina. SEA and Loch Lomond Yacht Club member Kurt Sund organized the day’s effort. A number of SEA members joined with LLYC members and friends to clean up along our shoreline.

Incredibly, over 250 pounds of trash were picked up! What a great community effort. Thank you Kurt and everyone who came out for helping to keep our marine environment healthy and clean.
