Jane’s journey with SEA began 45 years ago when she was brought on to lead the Oceanic Society's newly formed marine environment focused sailing program. During that time she started a summer youth sailing program.

In 1990, she and several others founded SEA as a separate program from the Oceanic Society. Under her guidance, SEA has transformed the lives of many Marin and San Francisco children and become a beacon for youth sailing education in the region.

SEA, with Jane’s leadership, has provided an exceptional environment for kids to learn to sail and stay safe on the water. More importantly, it has served as a transformational pathway for hundreds of young people. Many campers who started with SEA have become counselors, building an active, positive community, developing exceptional leadership and practical skills, and sharing their enthusiasm with each new generation. SEA’s approach has allowed countless individuals to grow, learn the skills of seamanship, cooperation, and leadership, and carry those skills throughout their lives.

Over the years, SEA has garnered prestigious accolades, including the Nimitz Trophy in 1985, 1998, 2004, and 2021, as well as the Garrett Horder Memorial Trophy for excellence in youth training in 2024. These honors are a testament to the quality and impact of the programs Jane helped create and nurture.

For all these reasons and many more, we are incredibly grateful for Jane’s contributions. We wish her all the best in her well-earned retirement. All of us at SEA are committed to honoring this legacy by continuing to provide affordable, accessible community youth and adult sailing programs that engage, educate, and inspire sailors for years to come.
